The Gutter Twins @ La Maroquinerie February 19, 2008 - Paris, France

Meet The Gutter Twins. Greg Dulli, the frontman of The Afghan Whigs, and Mark Lanegan, the beast unleashed of Queens of the Stone Age. The legendary duo had collaborated before on Dulli's side-project, The Twilight Singers, whom I saw back in 2006 in London. And to sum up the show, it was a delightful evening for a nap or a book-reading (which I did during the gig).

That said, you must be asking yourself, "Why is she even bothering listening to the band, The Gutter Twins?"

Well, the reason couldn't be simpler. It's AWESOME music.

I was fortunate to preview their debut album, Saturnalia, before it's March 3rd release, and it blew me away. The combination of Mark's deep growling and threatening voice in contrast to Greg's sweet and emotional vocals gave incredible depth to their sound. Saturnalia is a blend of Mark's and Greg's differing styles that work as a masterpiece I couldn't recommend higher.

Seeing them live, I can say The Gutter Twins are overloaded with charisma. Especially when you realise you're standing face to face with two of the greatest frontmen in alternative rock.

On your right, Mark Lanegan, like a statue, doesn't move a lot, but when he sings, your bones are shaken to the core from both fear and delight. That man is simply a vocal monument that can either rock you or make you weep (listen to Mark Lanegan's solo effort, Bubblegum, for proof).

On your left, you got Greg Dulli. Lively and playful, he wears his music on his sleeve sweating from every pore of his body. While Mark strikes fear, Greg lifts your heart and without warning, you're having an out-of-body experience living inside their music where nothing else matters.

The Gutter Twins are still on tour and will have plenty of shows this spring and summer. If they're playing near you, don't hesitate. Buy a ticket and fulfill the pilgrimage to your musical Mecca.
